 Text Box:

The
First Stages Theatre Company is proud to announce the 2002-2003 season of readings! Join us in celebrating another year  of quality alternative theatre in Port Hope.

Text Box: by A.R. Gurney
Saturday, November 2, 2002

A brilliantly conceived and richly humorous theatrical tour de force in which six performers portray a wide range of diverse characters as they delineate the dying lifestyle of wealthy WASP-dom, and the now neglected room which was once a vital sense of family life.

…a thoughtful and superbly written comedy…” VARIETY.

“…often funny and rueful and, by the end, very moving.” NY   TIMES

Saturday, January 18th, 2003

The conflict between the established artist and the adulatory fan who becomes a protégé, disciple, colleague, and friend – and finally rival – is one of those great topics…It resurfaces in Donald Margulies’ provocative new play, COLLECTED STORIES which confronts the prominent short-story writer, Ruth Steiner, with her student turned confidant, Lisa Morrison.

“With his fine ear for detail. Margulies creates an authentic, insular world, and he gives equal weight to the opposing viewpoints of two formidable characters.” LA TIMES

One of the great mystery thrillers and among the best of its kind, everyone is familiar with this dark tale of Dr. Seward whose daughter, Lucy, is rapidly succumbing to a mysterious illness. Dr. Van Helsing, a specialist, believes that the girl is a victim of a vampire. The vampire is at last found to be their neighbour, Count Dracula. Thereafter, it’s a desperate race to save Lucy and forever end Count Dracula’s desperate hunt. This gripping, sexy and sometimes funny thriller is adapted from the classic novel by Bram Stoker.

“An evening of high-class fun.” NEWSWEEK

Text Box: by Michel Tremblay
Saturday, March 29, 2003

Hosanna, a Montreal transvestite, returns from what she hoped would be a triumphant costume party where she would take first prize dressed as Elizabeth Taylor in her role of Cleopatra. Through her direct address to the audience and her interactions with her motorcycle stud boyfriend, Cuirette, we are introduced to the world of Montreal drag queens. Hosanna is a scathingly funny, modern classic layered with emotion and resonance.
Warning: strong language and provocative themes.

“HOSANNA is an exhilarating, funny and very moving work…” THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR“…fluid, glitzy…immensely full of life.” THE GLOBE AND MAIL

Adapted from Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos. Set in France among aristocrats before the revolution, this is a play for all time about sexual manner and manipulation. Dangerous Liaisons charts the seduction of the young and willing Cecile and the demure, yet passionate, Mme. de Tourvel by Le Vicomte de Valmont, a cynical pleasure seeker. His seductive enterprises are encouraged by his former mistress, a lady with ulterior motive. The popular movie starred Michelle Pfeiffer, John Malkovich and Glenn Close.

“A compelling evening of malicious wit.” N.Y. TIMES

ART GALLERY OF NORTHUMBERLAND

Carl Hoselton: A Retrospective
The Art Gallery of Northumberland is pleased to be hosting a retrospective of the late Carl Hoselton's works from September 7 to October 19, 2002.

Hoselton, originally trained in jewellery design, is best known for his establishment of the Hoselton Studios, which he left to his brother to run in the early 1980's in order to pursue work in other media. The works that are included in this exhibition focus on his nature studies, his exploration of the abstract and his sculpture for children. The works have been rendered primarily in wood, with some works in stone. Also included in the exhibition are some of Carl's paintings. The exhibition has been put together with the assistance of his family and private collectors.

ART GALLERY PETERBOROUGH

Exhibitions

Kai Chan: Rainbow Lakes
August 3 to October 6, 2002

In this survey exhibition of recent works, Kai Chan presents fragile wall constructions which evoke a spatial poetry that is both spare and poignant. Some of the constructions are composed of intricate hand coloured toothpicks threaded and precariously hung in dense constellations. His processes are borrowed from craft traditions found in basket weaving, jewellery and woodworking. Kai Chan turns toward nature for both material and inspiration. In his catalogue essay, Robin Metcalfe writes that “Kai’s wall constructions are like his garden…or the unfolding of a text or a strand of DNA…like stage settings for a pastoral comedy.”
Kai Chan was born in China and immigrated to Canada in 1966. He is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art in interior design and holds a degree in Biology from Chung Chi College in Hong Kong. In 1998 Kai was the recipient of the Jean A. Chalmers National Crafts Award. His works can be found in public and private collections including the Canadian Museum of Civilization and the Canada Council Art Bank.
Co-curated by Stuart Reid, Director / Curator The Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery and Robin Metcalfe, Curator of Contemporary Art, Museum London

Telecare provides a 24 hour service.  Over 7000 calls per year come from lonely, depressed, discouraged and hurting individuals.   In the years of operation, volunteers have never missed a shift in answering the telephones.  Volunteers take a 50 hour training program which includes topics such as self-growth, active listening skills, suicide workshops and awareness of the many community help agencies.   Many community professionals have contributed to the workshops.  A back-up team provides immediate support to telephone workers.   For years daily reassurance calls are made to people who are alone.  Telecare also takes after-hour calls for such agencies as the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Alzheimers Society and Emergency Housing.  Assistance is given to Lindsay and Bancroft Telecare Centres by taking calls when needed.
