A BIG THANK-YOU FOR NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY
Community and Social Services Minister John Baird and MPP Doug Galt recently
applauded everyone in this community, especially Northumberland County Social
Services for their leadership, hard work and dedication to the Community
Participation component of the Ontario Works program. With the support and
co-operation of local community non-profit and/or public organizations,
Northumberland County Social Services staff were successful in placing 292
people in volunteer community placements. As a reward for surpassing their
1999-2000 target by 177 (the local target was only 115 placements), Minister
John Baird presented the County with a cheque for $177,000. This funding is to
be re-invested in a variety of human services needed here in Northumberland.
There are many reasons why our local community non-profit and/or public
organizations are getting involved in sponsoring an unpaid community placement
with Ontario Works, but....
Here are the Top 5 Reasons for doing so:
5. It's a good opportunity to get that
wish-list of extra projects completed.
4. It's a quick and easy way to get the volunteers you need,
at no cost to you.
3. It's great to be able to help people in their journey back
to employment.
2. It's truly a chance to demonstrate your contribution to
your community.
and the Number #1 Reason to participate is....
It's a WIN-WIN situation for everyone involved !!
So if your agency needs VOLUNTEERS and would like to sponsor a placement, contact one of the Community Liason Officers at Ontario Works (905) 372-6846 or 1-800-354-7051 ext.425 or 426.

TO
WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Mr. Bruce Morrison, a local resident of Cobourg, is looking for people
interested in combating the exorbitant cost of gasoline. In his opinion,
gasoline is a necessity, not a luxury. He is willing to initiate a consumers
watch-dog group, and he is open to ideas and suggestions. At present, his idea
is to report daily the cost of gasoline per litre at local service stations,
then use the local press and radio outlets to report the prices, and then buy
gas at the station with the lowest price. If the station with the lowest price
is supported, the price of gas should start going down. Mr. Morrison believes
that we have to start somewhere! If you are interested in this idea, contact:
