In this funny, warmhearted gem of a play, relationships are formed, discovered, re-discovered and interwoven between four fascinating characters. Doc, the local physician and Beulah, the local hairstylist, have known each other for thirty years, but have never become romantically involved. When Evan and Kim arrive in Fox Valley in order for Kim to pay off her student loans by taking a job at the local hospital, they have difficulty adjusting to the small town way of life. The young couple have a lot to learn from locals Doc and Beulah, but it turns out that the teachers may have even more to learn from their students as the older couple begin to discover what they've been missing all these years. A delightful story about finding "that special person" when and where you least expect it. | Evenings:

RURAL RAMBLE
CANCELLED
Due to concerns for the health and well being of agriculture in Northumberland
County, the Rural Ramble committee has decided to cancel the farm tours for the
year 2001. The committee regretted to make the decision to withdraw this popular
summer-time event. At a recent meeting with host farmers and their families, the
group thoroughly discussed the foot and mouth disease in U.K. and Europe, and
the extra risks that host families would be taking should there be international
visitors on our tour. Because it would be impossible to guarantee that none of
the visitors would be from overseas, and because the disease is so contagious,
the committee has recommended that the tour be cancelled. The committee is
anticipating that Rural Ramble will be back next year. For more information,
please call Cathy McCann at 613 475-1488.

New Services at
the Help Centre for Job Seekers
The Help Centre has recently announced two new
services for Northumberland Job Seekers to respond to community and labour
market needs.
The Help Centre has conducted Job Search Success Workshops for Human
Resources Development Canada since 1997. The workshops address the job
search skills of Northumberland residents, and have been improved each year
to meet community and labour market needs. In 2000, the Mature Advantage
component was added to provide a marketing tool for job seekers who are over
40 years old. For the coming year, The Help Centre has improved once again
on the successful workshop format, which finds 80% of participants finding
work within 3 months. The two enhanced services are:
1. Sector Specific Job Search Success Workshops In order for job seekers to maximize their time looking for work, all job search aspects vital to finding work quickly will be geared to three sectors, being Customer Service/Retail, Office/Administration and Manufacturing. These two day workshops will cover job search skills specific to each sector's needs, and include employers as guest speakers to highlight labour market needs. As a result, the job seeker will gain heightened skills to find the work they are looking for.The continuing services provided for Human Resources Development Canada will be the half day workshop on the use of the Internet for effective job search, and the Mature Advantage Program, which is a 3 day format specifically geared to job seekers who are over 40. "We are excited to be providing a unique marketing tool and services for Northumberland job seekers," states Elisabeth Z. Simmons, Managing Director of The Help Centre, "Sector specific assistance and on-line marketing meets the current needs of both Northumberland job seekers and employers." All Northumberland residents seeking employment can attend any or all of these workshops free of charge. All workshops run monthly, and pre-registration is required. For more information, contact Managing Director, Elisabeth Z. Simmons at 905-372-2646.2. On-Line Client Marketing In addition to the workshops themselves, The Help Centre will be offering on-line posting of job seekers' profiles. The updated postings will be communicated to over 100 local employers. Employers can then request applications from the profiles which interest them.

Art Gallery of
Northumberland
Windy Valley: Four Seasons in a Field
Paintings by Martha Eleen
April 21, 2001 - June 2, 2001
Opening: Saturday April 21, 2-4 pm
The Art Gallery of Northumberland is pleased to
announce the opening of a new solo exhibition of paintings by artist Martha
Eleen on Saturday April 21, 2001 from 2-4 pm in the main gallery.
Produced over a period of eight years, this
series of paintings explore the changing landscape from one location in Hamilton
Township, Northumberland County. The works, all oil on wood, from
Triptychs of three panels related thematically and hung in groups that bring the
viewer an understanding of nature and its power. In using three different
moments in each panel, Martha introduces the element of time and allows the
viewer to explore the effect that it has on the landscape.
Martha says of her work, "I hope that the
encounter with the entire body of work, in which a single subject is displayed
in its profuse variety, will evoke in the viewer an understanding not only of
the way nature looks, but of its inner meaning. To me this experience has
a spiritual dimension, and I regard the content of the paintings as a statement
about creation."
The exhibition runs until Saturday June 2,
2001. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and
Saturday form 1:00 to 5:00 pm.
For further information call the Art Gallery
of Northumberland 905-372-0333.
