The Canadian Hearing Society

Community Development Board’s Annual General Meeting,
with special guest speaker Frances Itani.

Winner 2004 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book, as well as one of the prestigious Canadian books to be chosen for CBC’s “Canada Reads” program, Deafening tells the story of Grania, a young woman, deaf since the age of five, who is sent to the Ontario School for the Deaf in Belleville (now the Sir James Whitney School for the Deaf) to be educated in both spoken and sign language. While there, she falls in love with a hearing man from the east coast only to be separated from him by the coming of the war.  Partly based on Itani’s experiences with her own deaf grandmother, Deafening weaves together pathos and humour to create a strong, graceful portrayal of one woman’s journey.

 Frances Itani will read from her acclaimed novel, as well as share her experiences researching Grania’s story within the Deaf and hard of hearing communities.

Ross Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Annual Meeting

Monday, May 29, 2006

1:30 p.m.

at the Lindsay Inn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Victoria County Humane Society has a new project to raise much needed funds for the animals seeking new homes through the Adoption Centre in Lindsay.  Volunteers will be creating beautiful wreaths that will be sold at the annual Craft Sale fundraiser, held each year in November. Once a year you will have the opportunity to purchase a one of a kind wreath.  All proceeds from the sales of these works of art goes directly to support the animals.
Having a yard sale? If you’d like to donate items you think could be used to create the “Wreaths of Love”, invite them by informing the Adoption Centre of the time and date of your sale. They will try to send a volunteer to pick out items they can recycle to raise $ for the animals. Or help out by presorting your surplus items and dropping suitable ones off.
Donations of suitable items can be made any time at the Adoption Centre at 111 McLaughlin Rd. Lindsay. Don’t wait till Christmas! Although the wreaths will only be available for sale once a year, this is an ongoing project. Volunteers need time to sort supplies and create the Wreaths of Love, so sort your seasonal decorations now. Before discarding useable items, think of the animals.  Your items can be turned into $ for the Adoption Centre!
