INFORMATION AND DISCUSSION SESSIONS FOR WOMEN
The Women's Health Care Centre presents a series of information and discussion
sessions for mid-life women. The sessions will be held on the first Tuesday of
the month, from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The next session will be held on Tuesday, June
6th, will be entitled "Cooking with the Perfect 10 foods" with
Carolyn Doris, registered dietician. The next sessions will be as follows:

THE WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE CENTRE MOVES
The Women's Health Care Centre will be moving to a new location effective May
30th. The new location will be on 69 George Street North, Peterborough, across from Crary
Park. The 411 Water Street office will close on May 25th, at 5:00 p.m. All
phone/fax numbers will remain the same.
ART GALLERY OF NORTHUMBERLAND "ART IN
FLIGHT" EXHIBITION
The Art Gallery's current outreach exhibition "Art in Flight",
is currently on view at the Hope Township Municipal Office. The viewing will run
from Thursday, May 18th, to Friday, June 16th. The exhibition will then travel
to the Art Gallery of Northumberland in Port Hope for a showing from June 21st, to July 22nd.

HEALTH & SAFETY TELECONFERENCING SESSIONS
The Health Care Health and Safety Association of Ontario (HCHSA) is offering a series of
informative hour-long teleconference sessions on current occupational health and
safety topics designed for the health care sectors. The next session, "Antibiotic
Resistant Organisms - Staff Implications", will be held on
Wednesday, June 14th, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. EST. The session will feature guest
speaker, Dr. Allison McGreer, FRCPC. Dr. McGreer is the Associate Professor of
pathobiology and Labratory Medicine and Public Health Sciences at the University
of Toronto, as well the Director of infection control at Mount Sinai Hospital,
and an infection control consultant to Peel Memorial Hospital, Scarborough
General Hospital, and The Bloorview McMillan Center. If you are interested in
the teleconference, please obtain a form from the HCHSA, and fax it back to
reserve your space. Registrations will be taken on a first-come, first-served
basis, with up to 200 participating locations. Each registrant will be
responsible for the long-distance charges incurred (there is no charge for

RAINBOW YOUTH COALITION SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR
PUBLICATION
The Rainbow Youth Coalition is seeking submission from LGBTS (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Two Spirited) youth for a publication detailing their rural and
small town experience. The goal of this initiative is to bring youth together,
reduce isolation, and draw attention to the general and specific issues
associated with being LGBTS youth in rural Ontario. The book will be published
and available for youth and youth service providers throughout Ontario.
The Coalition is looking for stories, narratives, poetry, artwork, or anything
that best describes a personal experience. Submissions can be of any subject matter
ranging from 'coming out' stories to thoughts and feelings on being LGBTS rural
youth. Please post your submissions on the Rainbow Youth Website at: http://www.parn.kawartha.com/index.html
If you wish to remain anonymous, please indicate this in your article; however
we do ask for at least a first name or pseudonym, your age, and where you live
(i.e. with county, and whether city or country). Please post on the website, or

coalition reserves the right to edit submissions.
COURTICE 10km RUN/WALK FOR EPILEPSY
Epilepsy Durham Region will be sponsoring a 10km run/walk on Sunday, June 4th,
2000. Start time is 8:30 a.m. Registration will take place from 7:00 a.m. - 8:15
a.m. Prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, age categories, men
& women, as well as top pledge raisers. The early bird entry fee (before May
26th), is $10, and is $15 on the day of the run/walk. There will be free

TOUR OF DISTINCTIVE HOMES OF COBOURG AND AREA
You are invited to a tour of distinctive homes of Cobourg and area, on Saturday,
June 10th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The tour will feature seven homes.
Proceeds will go to the Northumberland United Way. Tickets are available at: The
Avid Reader, Midtown Mall, BJ's Hair Care, Marie Dressler House, the Port Hope
& District Chamber of Commerce, the Campbell Company, and the Northumberland
United Way. Tickets are $20 each. For further information, call the United Way

EXHIBIT AT THE PRESQU'ILE PROVINCIAL PARK
The Royal Ontario Museum's Outreach Program returns to Presqu'ile Provincial
Park this spring with another outstanding exhibit, this time featuring Bats. The
Exhibit will be temporarily located at the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre and
will eventually come to roost in the Nature Centre at the Park. This exhibit
explores the elusive creatures that flit about in the Ontario night and that
have long been the objects of human fasicination. Bats have inhabited the night
skies for more than 50 million years. This exhibit looks at the reality of these
creatures and the truth behind the myths and fables. On Saturday, June 10th, a
Park Naturalist will be leading a workshop entitled "Bats Galore". For
a fee of $10, you will see live bats, and watch aerial displays. You will even
build a bat house for your home. Space in the workshop is limited. For more

WORKPLACE SPECIFIC HAZARD TRAINING
The Health Care Health and Safety Association (HCHSA) is hosting several
workplace specific hazard training over this year. The cost for HCHSA members is
$345 per person + GST, and non-members cost $445 per person + GST. Each training
session must have a minimum of 10 participants, and can accommodate up to
30 participants. The remaining year 2000 schedule is as follows:

LEARNING DISABILITIES
WORKSHOP
On June 9th, 2000, the Speech Language & Hearing Association of Peterborough
will present a one-day workshop designed for parents, early childhood educators,
teachers, caregivers, speech-language pathologists, and physicians. The workshop
will feature Dr. Gerry Wallach, who is currently the Executive Director of
Emerson College's Los Angeles Centre, and has written extensively about language
disorders in school-age children, and language intervention and academic success
as well. The workshop will outline some of the connections among language
learning, literacy, and academic success. Specific strategies for developing
language-based literacy programs for in and out-of-class instruction from
elementary to high school levels will be detailed. The workshop will also cover
creative ways of making written language more accessible and meaningful to
language learning disabled students, and suggestions for integrating curricular
content into language intervention goals will be explored. Cases and lesson
plans will provide opportunities for interaction and further discussion. The
workshop will be held at the Lion's Centre, Burnham Street, Peterborough.
Registrations before May 26th cost $25, and registrations after May 26th will
cost $40. Registration is limited to the first 200 persons. For more

YOUR STORY AND SPEAK OUT AGAINST VIOLENCE
The Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses (OAITH) invites women
who have lived with violence from a partner to join in sharing their story with
other women and other communities. Women are invited to send letters, poems,
statements, or other writings. Painting and other artwork from women and
children are also welcome. All entries will be anonymous and any potentially
identifying information will be edited. The deadline for entries is May 31,
2000. The hope is that in joining together to share stories and demand change,
all people can move forward towards women's equality. For more information, call

NORTHUMBERLAND
CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTRE AGM
Dr. Bruce Ferguson of the Hospital for Sick Children, Community Health/Mental
Health Program, will be in Cobourg for the occasion of the Northumberland Child
Development Centre's Annual General Meeting. Come and hear Dr. Ferguson speak
about building networks in the community and improving systems of care and
support for children and families. The AGM will be held on June 21st, 2000, at
the Cobourg Public Library. A reception will begin at 6:00 p.m., and an address
by Dr. Ferguson will start at 7:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. For

LIBRARY PARTNERING PROGRAM
The Cobourg Public Library is pleased to announce the launch of a unique and
exciting new materials donation program. Effective immediately, any person from
the community may buy a book from a participating retailer - read the book - and
then donate the book to the library within 60 days of the purchase. A charitable
income tax receipt will be issued for the value of the book excluding sales
taxes. The book may be presented at any of the three library locations of
Cobourg, Gores Landing, and Bewdley, and must be accompanied with the original
sales receipt. The participating retailers are: The Avid Reader, The Cobourg
Book Store, Coles Book Store, and C.W. Hay Bookseller. For more information

SCHOOL'S COOL
PROGRAM
Brighton Family Resource Centre is considering hosting a "School's Cool
Program" in Brighton this summer, in partnership with Northumberland Child
Development Centre. School's Cool is an 8 week ( 72 hour) learning readiness
program for children who are:
3-5 years of age
entering kindergarten
finding kindergarten challenging
being home-schooled

BEACH RESORT 8th ANNUAL CAR SHOW
On Sunday, June 25th, the Golden Beach Resort will hold it's 8th Annual Car Show
from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration is $5.00 per vehicle. Spectator parking
is $2.00 per carload. All proceeds will be donated to the Roseneath Fire
Department.

During the months of February, March, and April, info Northumberland held a
contest to obtain updated information from organizations on our database. Prizes
were awarded as follows: 1st prize - A website designed just for the
organization, and maintenance for the site for 1 year. 2nd prize - mousepads and
pens for every member of the organization staff. 3rd prize - free membership to
our organization entitling use of our "soon to be coming" volunteer

LOCAL
ARTIST WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Freelancer art director, book and cover designer, and illustrator, Tannice
Goddard, a resident of Cobourg, has just won a national award in the annual
Alcuin Society's Citation Competition 2000. Tannice has been awarded 1st prize
for best book text design in the category of General Trade Books - Prose
fiction, book title "Olivo Oliva", published by Stoddart
Publishing Co. Ltd. in Toronto. Alcuin Citations are the only national awards
for excellence in book design in Canada. Tannice's book design was selected as
best from over 200 books submitted by publishers across the country. Judges
considered among other things, sound marriage of design and content, appropriate
(not just appealing) cover design, page layout, typography, and the balance of
illustration and text. Congratulations, Tannice.
ANNOUNCING A NEW COBOURG - PORT HOPE BUS
SERVICE
For a twelve month trial period, there will be a public transit service between
the towns of Cobourg and Port Hope. If you are using the east and northbound
transit route, please be at your required bus stop at least 5 minutes prior
to departure in order for this route to meet the scheduled Cobourg Transit
Bus at the A&P stop.
