NORTHUMBERLAND CONTEST WINNERS
During the months of February, March, and April, info Northumberland held a
contest to obtain updated information from organizations on our database. Prizes
were awarded as follows: 1st prize - A website designed just for the
organization, and maintenance for the site for 1 year. 2nd prize - mousepads and
pens for every member of the organization staff. 3rd prize - free membership to
our organization entitling use of our "soon to be coming" volunteer
opportunities database for 1 year. Here is the list of our winners.

ANNOUNCING A NEW COBOURG - PORT HOPE BUS
SERVICE
For a twelve month trial period, there will be a public transit service between
the towns of Cobourg and Port Hope. If you are using the east and northbound
transit route, please be at your required bus stop at least 5 minutes prior
to departure in order for this route to meet the scheduled Cobourg Transit
Bus at the A&P stop.

EPILEPSY DURHAM REGION FIRST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Epilepsy Durham Region is proud to announce their First Annual Golf
Tournament on Thursday, September 14th, 2000. This event will take place at
Lakeridge Golf and Country Club starting at approximately 1:00 pm with a
shotgun, followed by a deliciously planned dinner menu. Early birds who register
before June 30th pay $125 per golfer, however those who sign up after this date
will pay $150 per player. With registration, each golfer is entitled to a $50
tax receipt off their ticketed price. Space is limited to the first 144
registered and paid golfers, come out and enjoy a day of fun and prizes. A
sponsorship opportunity will be available which provides sponsors with the
chance to have their name on all future promotions provided by the Epilepsy
Durham Region Annual Golf Tournament. It also entitles sponsors to have their
name on one of the golf holes used in the golf tournament. The cost of
sponsorship is only $150 per sponsor and in return there is a charitable tax

PORT HOPE FESTIVAL THEATRE KICKS OFF SUMMER 2000 SEASON
The Port Hope Festival Theatre kicks off it's Summer 2000 Season with the brand
new romantic comedy: "Second Time Around" by Canadian playwright Alissa
Martin, playing June 14th to July 1st. "Second Time Around" is a
heartwarming romantic comedy about returning home and rediscovering your roots.
Tickets are $16.50 to $22.00. The Port Hope Festival Theatre Summer Season 2000
has been generously sponsored by Cameco, and the play "Second Time Around" has
been sponsored by Classical 103.1 FM. For further information, please

ART OFF THE WALL
The "Art off the Wall" Summer/Fall Show and Show on the Road's
"Art in Flight" are
two new exhibitions that will be on display at the Art Gallery of
Northumberland's Port Hope Gallery. The official opening is Thursday, June 22,
from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Art off the Wall Summer/Fall Show features recent
works for sale or rent by artists from Northumberland County and beyond. The
exhibition is a collection of "soaring" images from the Art Gallery of
Northumberland's Collection. Art in Flight closes on July 22nd, while the Art off the Wall will continue
until the winter season. Art rentals from Art off the Wall start at $10 per
month, and is a perfect way to enliven your business or home. For more

SUMMER PICNICS 2000
The Northumberland Up From The Ashes Poverty Action Group (nUFTApag) will be
holding several summer picnics during the summer. The details are as follows:
July 1st - Float in Cobourg Canada Day Parade. Picnic afterwards. kitty corner to Post Office in Victoria Park
July 5th, July 19th, August 2nd - Picnic in the Park
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - Marina Park in Port Hope (Mill street at the lake)
July 12th, July 26th, August 9th - Picnic in the Park
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. - East End Victoria Park in Cobourg (across from Ball
Diamond by the beach)
September 6th - Soup Kitchens resume every Wednesday at HKPR Health Unit in Port Hope
All picnics will be serving hot dogs, hamburgers, pop, watermelon, etc. All is free to low income people. Bring your swimming clothing. Picnics will not be held if it is raining or if there is bad weather. Call Joanne at (905) 377-1082 for rides or more info.
THE OPEN DOOR SERIES
On Monday, June 26th, there will be another "Open Door" presentation
at the Family Services Building, 66 Swayne Street, Cobourg. The meeting will run
from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., and will feature Rev. John Saynor sharing on "The
Transformative Power of Grief". Free Coffee and Donuts will be provided. To

RAINBOW
YOUTH COALITION SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR PUBLICATION
The Rainbow Youth Coalition is seeking submission from LGBTS (Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Two Spirited) youth for a publication detailing their rural and
small town experience. The goal of this initiative is to bring youth together,
reduce isolation, and draw attention to the general and specific issues
associated with being LGBTS youth in rural Ontario. The book will be published
and available for youth and youth service providers throughout Ontario.
The Coalition is looking for stories, narratives, poetry, artwork, or anything
that best describes a personal experience. Submissions can be of any subject
matter ranging from 'coming out' stories to thoughts and feelings on being LGBTS
rural youth. Please post your submissions on the Rainbow Youth Website at: http://www.parn.kawartha.com/index.html
If you wish to remain anonymous, please indicate this in your article; however
we do ask for at least a first name or pseudonym, your age, and where you live
(i.e. with county, and whether city or country). Please post on the website, or

are due by July 7th. The coalition reserves the right to edit submissions.

SCHOOL'S COOL PROGRAM
School's Cool is an 8 week (72 hour) learning readiness program for children:
This program will help the child's learning, while building on their social, language, reasoning, and self help skills. "School's Cool" will run from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the weeks from July 4th to August 24th, at C.R. Gummow Public School. There is no cost for the program. Bob Kerr, Director of Kinark Child and Family Services in Cobourg, is leaving
his current position for a new position in the Durham Region. We would like to
wish him the best in his new endeavors, and thank him for the contribution he
has made to the County of Northumberland. Thank you Bob, you will be missed!

ARTIST WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Freelancer art director, book and cover designer, and illustrator, Tannice
Goddard, a resident of Cobourg, has just won a national award in the annual
Alcuin Society's Citation Competition 2000. Tannice has been awarded 1st prize
for best book text design in the category of General Trade Books - Prose
fiction, book title "Olivo Oliva", published by Stoddart
Publishing Co. Ltd. in Toronto. Alcuin Citations are the only national awards
for excellence in book design in Canada. Tannice's book design was selected as
best from over 200 books submitted by publishers across the country. Judges
considered among other things, sound marriage of design and content, appropriate
(not just appealing) cover design, page layout, typography, and the balance of
illustration and text. Congratulations, Tannice.

JOB SEARCH AND RESOURCES FOR RURAL NORTHUMBERLAND
The Community Employment Resource Centres (CERC) of Port Hope and Cobourg are
pleased to offer an extension of CERC's services to rural communities in
Northumberland County. Employment Resource Centres are free, self-serve centres
that provide today's most comprehensive job search resources and career
information. Appointments are not necessary, although registration is required
to use the facilities. Beginning summer and fall 2000, qualified staff will be
available on-site to assist you in your job search, including assistance with
resume, cover letter, and interview preparation; access to computers and the
Internet; fax/photocopying service, and information/referrals to other community

"THE
MILLENNIUM PROJECT" EXHIBITION
This summer the Art Gallery of Northumberland will co-host, with the Robert
McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa, "The Millenium Project". This is a group
exhibition by The Iris Group, a Durham/Northumberland region Feminist
co-operative. In this exhibition, textual and historical symbols are used to
re-interpret traditional cultural patterns and explore the natural world that
binds the human condition. The pieces are being created independently, but
through ongoing discussion amongst the artists, are designed to achieve social
and cross-cultural integration as metaphorical symbols with which to welcome the
next Millennium. A grouping of works related to Memory and Nature will be show
at the AGN. Works related to memory and time will be at the RMG. The work
includes photography, painting, installation, drawing, sculpture, and writing.
The opening will coincide with the summer Waterfront Festival on June 30, 2000.
The gallery is open from 1-5 on Saturdays, and 10 pm - 4 pm from Tuesday to

The local peer support group for depression, anxiety & mood disorders named
"The Search", is now online at: www.fourinfo.com/Search.
The Search was one of the lucky winners in our draw during the month of
February. The group won a website designed by our staff, and free hosting and
maintenance for the site for one year. Visit the site today!
