Program Summary
READbound is the only literacy service in Northumberland designed to provide 'at risk' children (5 -18 years of age) with improved skills in reading, writing, phonics, spelling, grammar, comprehension and math. The community has overwhelmingly responded to this new program; requesting assistance for children from all over the County, with new volunteers committing their time to the educational assistance of our young people.
Trained volunteer Tutors are matched with children on an individual basis, where they commit 2-5 hours per week in structural learning. Many tutors are assigned to an in-school placement, where the school identifies 'at risk' children with deficits in learning, and the families are offered a Tutor, who assists the child during resource or special education time. Tutors are also for educational support after school, evenings and weekends.
Many of us take for granted the ability to read fluently and we need to focus on the 'at risk' children who may not have "mainstream learning style", and who are struggling to cope in the traditional education system. Ability to perform directly affects self-esteem and willingness to learn new concepts, which significantly provides opportunities, in the future of that child! The keys to success are through education and positive mentoring!!!

The following is something to make us stop and think. Take this quiz:
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
Easier?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
The Lesson?:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards.
They are the ones that care.

OSSN
Poverty Index
This past October marks the fifth anniversary of the
welfare benefit cuts. This cut was one of the first acts of the Conservative
government after it was elected in 1995. It was the first of many, and perhaps
the most significant of the cuts made in the welfare system over the past five
years. The Workfare Watch Website has posted this report on their website. Here
is an excerpt from it reporting statistics of people living on
Welfare in Ontario.
Number of people on welfare assistance in Ontario in the month of October 2000 - 450,786 (excludes ODSP)
Number of children in families on welfare assistance in Ontario - 190,000 (42%)
Percentage by which maximum welfare benefits were cut in the month of October 1995 - 21.6%
Change in maximum welfare benefits for a single person due to the cut - $143 ($663 - $520)
Maximum amount a single person receives from welfare for a shelter allowance - $325
Average monthly cost of a bachelor apartment in Ontario - $561
Amount that a single parent on social assistance with one child has remaining every month after rent and food have been paid is $2.24, for all of the other expenses, per person, per month.
According to the North Bay and District Health Unit a nutritious diet for one week for a family of three, one female adult between the ages of 25 - 49 ($26.09), one boy 10 years old ($28.63) and one girl 7 years old ($22.28) totals $77.00. The cost for 1 month would be $334.
