ART
EXHIBITION at the FIREHALL THEATRE
The Northumberland Players
will be hosting an ART EXHIBITION at the FireHall Theatre on Friday, November 29th
from 7pm to 10pm and Saturday, November 30th from 1pm to 6pm.
The Exhibition will feature recent works by local artists Joel Campbell,
Greg Curtis and Betsie Downie.
Joel Campbell
attended Sheridan College for both the Illustration and Computer Animation
programs. His background is in traditional painting and illustration but has
recently moved into motion design, animation and filmmaking. He has received
awards from Much Music for animation as well as five Applied Arts Magazine
awards for Illustration. His most recent award was from the prestigious New York
Society of Illustrators. Joel's work has been published in Today's Parent
Magazine, The New York Times and Applied Arts Magazine among others. Joel likes
to fly kites in his free time or play "space ship" with his nephews.
Greg Curtis
went to Central Technical School to study art, and graduated in 1977.
He caught the “sculpture bug” there, but did not have access to large
equipment, and so he drew and painted for 20 years.
He finally woke up and started using small tools to produce the work he
does now, which integrates painting, sculpting and fabric texturing, with a
little writing thrown in. His
artwork has been exhibited locally, as well as in Toronto. Greg was born in Toronto, and moved to Cobourg in 1987, where
he now lives with his wife Mary Jo and their dog Sadie. His other interest is theatre.
Betsie Downie
attended the Artist’s Workshop, St. Michael’s College, University of
Toronto, where she studied sculpting with Francis Gage.
In 1970 she went on to study serigraphy at the Toronto School of Art, and
in 1978 she studied painting at O.C.A with David Bolduc.
One year later she opened her own studio, and has since exhibited her
work at a number of galleries, including Harbourfront Gallery, Sword Street
Gallery, the Geraldine Davis Gallery, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the Art
Gallery of Northumberland. Betsie
was born in Toronto, and now lives in Cobourg, where she is actively involved
with the Northumberland Players.
Admission to the ART
EXHIBITION is free, and all works exhibited will be available for purchase.

Daily Acts
of Peace at the Heart of
YMCA World Peace Week 2002
Cobourg, ON -
Incorporating a simple daily act of peace into our busy lives to change the
world one step at a time, is the idea behind this year’s YMCA World Peace
Week, November 17-23, 2002. Mahatma Gandhi was the inspiration for this year’s
theme, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world.”
As a values-based charity, the Family YMCA of Cobourg is
dedicated to teaching children, youth and adults about the many dimensions of
peace while also instilling values such as tolerance, inclusiveness, caring,
respect and responsibility for others. A special highlight of YMCA World Peace
Week is the awarding of the YMCA Peace Medallion to an individual or group who,
without any special resources, has demonstrated a commitment to peace through
special contributions made within our community or overseas.
Specific YMCA Peace Week activities and events planned at the
Family YMCA of Cobourg include:
·
Development Through My Eyes – development workshop for
secondary school students presented by the participants in the
Cobourg-Montreal-Nicaragua Youth Exchange 2002-2003. Students will participate
in workshops in Gender & Equality, What Makes Good Development and Enemies
of Peace. For a small donation, they will also be able to enjoy a Nicaraguan
lunch prepared by the exchange students. Friday, November 22, 2002 9:00 am –
2:00 pm
·
Presentation of the 2002 YMCA Peace Medal – Friday,
November 22, 2002 9:00 am
· Display of hundreds of Peace doves in the YMCA lobby, created by the children participating in all our Youth and Pre-school programs and the children from our 4 licensed YMCA Child Care Centres: our main facility and the Terry Fox Junior Y, Cobourg, Beatrice Strong Junior Y, Port Hope and Grafton Community Centre Junior Y, Grafton
This week is intended to remind and teach everyone about using love, compassion and human kindness to make a difference and bring peace. Given the deepening crises around the world, personal acts of peace are more important than ever before. The Family YMCA of Cobourg’s International Program Committee is letting people know that any act of peace is a step in the right direction and it may even inspire others to do the same. As technology continues to connect people around the world, teaching children to be socially responsible, to actively pursue peace-building activities and to appreciate cultural diversity is vital for a peaceful future.
Since 1981, YMCA Peace Day has been recognized annually throughout the world on the third Saturday in November. In 1984, YMCA Canada expanded on this initiative by dedicating a full week to exploring peace from a personal, community and international perspective. The Family YMCA of Cobourg has been participating and awarding the YMCA Peace Medal since 1988.
YMCA World Peace Week reflects the Y’s mission to support the growth of people in spirit, mind and body and to inspire a sense of responsibility in each other and our community, both at home and abroad.

Community Living Campbellford and Brighton recognized for excellence in services for people with disabilities
TORONTO, ON, 1 NOVEMBER 2002—Community Living Campbellford and Brighton was presented today with the Donner Canadian Foundation Award for Excellence in the Delivery of Services for People with Disabilities at a Queen’s Park reception hosted by The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.
Community Living Campbellford/Brighton offers a range of support and services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities including: family home, community residences, supported independent living, school to work options, community-based options, respite for families, and two community resource centres.
“Individuals we support have received provincial awards of recognition for their leadership from respected provincial leaders in Ontario,” says Chris Grayson, executive director of Community Living Campbellford/Brighton. “They are developing independence and courage as they achieve their dreams.”
The Donner
Canadian Foundation, with the assistance of The Fraser Institute, established
the annual Donner
Canadian Foundation Awards for Excellence in the Delivery of Social Services
in 1998 to recognize excellence and innovation among non-profit agencies at
the community level. Awards totaling $65,000
are presented annually.
This year’s recipients were chosen from among 282 applicants, representing 103 cities and towns across Canada. These agencies serve over 1.1 million clients; have more than 9,000 staff and their dedicated volunteers contribute over 31 million hours of community service.
Nine individual awards of $5,000 each are presented in these nine categories: Child Care Services, Counselling Services, Crisis Intervention, Alternative Education, Traditional Education, Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse, Provision of Basic Necessities, Services for People with Disabilities, and Services for Seniors.
“The voluntary sector represents a unique and vital component of our society. These agencies provide services to those who would otherwise go without and allow each of us the opportunity to contribute to our own individual communities,” says Allan Gotlieb, Chairman of the Donner Canadian Foundation. “The 2002 Donner Awards finalists and recipients represent the very best voluntary social service agencies in Canada.”

ONTARIO
ARTS COUNCIL THEATRE PROJECT GRANT AWARDED
The
Arbor Theatre Company of Peterborough has been awarded its first Ontario Arts
Council (OAC) Theatre Projects grant in almost a decade.
The
$2,500 Phase 1 award was secured by Arbor Theatre on behalf of the Art Gallery
of Peterborough (AGP) and Misfit Productions to help develop its January 2003
art history theatre offering entitled Juxta Posing for production at the
Art Gallery of Peterborough.
Of
the 82 applicants and organizations which requested grants in the August 1 2002
granting competition, only 24 or slightly more than 25 per cent received them.
The total amount distributed by the Ontario Arts Council in this grant
competition was $140,000. The total amount requested was $826,920, almost six
times the amount distributed.
Bev
Breedon, the General Manager of Arbor Theatre, said the company requested and
received its last Theatre Projects grant in 1994. "Community collaboration
is a hallmark of our company and part of our mandate and we are delighted to
assist the Art Gallery of Peterborough and Misfit Productions in their bold and
exciting creative endeavor," she said.
The
young audience script is an art history drama about a fictional Peterborough
painter torn between her desire to create fresh new works of art and her need to
balance her cheque book. It has been written by national award-winning
Peterborough playwright Ed Schroeter especially for the AGP.
The
Art Gallery commissioned the World Premiere script through the Laidlaw
Foundation’s Performing Arts Programme.
The
script, which examines a continuum of developments in art history as well as
some ideas expressed in an exhibition of work by renowned Peterborough painter
David Bierk, is designed to be performed in the art gallery’s main space
during the Bierk exhibition.
Ray
Henderson, the Artistic Director of Misfit Productions, who is directing and
co-producing the show, said the grant is very important in the refinement of
this particular production. "From a staging perspective this will be a
challenging show for the cast and crew. Not only is the playing being staged in
the Art Gallery during an exhibition, but three of the characters, who appear in
the form of famous painters, are actually projections of the main character’s
decision-making process."
Deirdre
Chisholm, the AGP’s Education & Public Programming Coordinator, said that
the script is a fast-paced, humourous, and thought-provoking educational play.
"A postmodern scenario that engages the viewer in a multisensorial
experience…Bierk’s provocative ideas come alive through Schroeter’s
characters.”
“DIABETES
INFORMATION DIRECTORY” LAUNCH
The Kawartha Branch of the Canadian Diabetes
Association produced an interesting ‘Diabetes Information Directory’ with
the financial assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
The
guide also contains information for the Lakeshore Branch of CDA, which covers
Northumberland County.
Launch date:
November 14th in Peterborough and at the General Meeting of the
Lakeshore Branch in Port Hope. This
date is significant to those interested in diabetes, as it is the birth date of
Dr. Frederick Banting, the Canadian Doctor who discovered insulin and
‘NATIONAL DIABETES DAY’.
The green and black guide
includes information on financial assistance, community resources, medications,
children and diabetes, and sample meal plans.
The guide is now available for those

With all of the headlines and conflicting reports
about the Kyoto protocol, many people are finding the issue of global climate
change to be overwhelming. Many are
also unsure of what they, as individuals, can do to help.
Recent reports from Ottawa indicate that there is going to be a
particular focus on household reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
To help decrease global warming and to meet Canada’s Kyoto goal of
reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 240 megatonnes a year, each Canadian must
take part and make an effort to make their home an energy efficient one.
Individuals are responsible for roughly one third of
all greenhouse gas emissions. Each
one of us is responsible for five tonnes of greenhouse gases per year. As
individuals to help reduce greenhouse-gases there are many simple low cost
things people can do. These
low-cost measures will not only decrease greenhouse gas emissions, but will
lower heating bills and make the home more comfortable as well.
·
Air sealing around doors and windows with shrink wrap can
reduce the amount of heat escaping from your home.
·
Opening curtains and blinds during sunny days and closing
them at night will help conserve energy.
·
Monitoring the thermostat will help lower heating costs –
for every degree you lower the thermostat there is an energy savings of
approximately 3%.
·
Wear extra layers in your house instead of turning the heat
up in a cool home.
·
Reducing electrical use and turning off appliances when not
in use will also help save.
·
Using a low
flow shower head can consume up to 60% less water.
The best means of reducing greenhouse emissions –
and saving money on bills – is by having a home expert perform an energy
efficiency test. The Home
Performance Experts at Peterborough Green-Up provide a comprehensive residential
problem solving service designed to help homeowners lower their energy bills and
improve their homes comfort. For
more information, or to book your visit, please call Green-up today!
By doing the little energy saving actions you not only take part in decreasing the amount of greenhouse-gases but you also save money at the same time.

Wise Charity Giving Tips for the Upcoming Holiday Season
OTTAWA On November 15, 2002– In honor of National Philanthropy Day being celebrated today, and with the holiday season quickly approaching, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is offering the general public some tips on how to make informed gifts.
“The holiday season is also known as the giving season,” said Rob Peacock, CFRE, Chair of the Canada Council and the Greater Toronto Chapter. “Anecdotally, nearly 40 percent of all charitable giving occurs in the last three months of the year, especially in November and December. Ninety-nine percent of the time, donors will be asked to give by a legitimate charity, but there are some steps that donors should take to ensure their dollars will be used for good and appropriate purposes.”
Among the tips Peacock offers donors are:
Donors should also know their rights. AFP and other fundraising organizations created the Donor Bill of Rights in 1992 to let donors know what they should expect from the organizations to which they contribute. The Donor Bill of Rights says that all contributors have these rights:
I. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
III. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
V. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
VI. To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization, or hired solicitors.
IX. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful, and forthright answers.
Donors must have full confidence in the nonprofit organization to which they contribute and support. If an organization does not allow for one of these rights, then donors should speak to someone within the organization about the problem.
National Philanthropy Day (NPD), November 15, is celebrated across North America by more than 40,000 donors, volunteers, foundations, corporations and others involved in charity at events hosted by AFP, the largest association of professional fundraisers in the world. NPD events honour local individuals and organizations that have made a profound impact on the quality of life in their communities.
For more information on National Philanthropy Day or the Donor Bill of Rights, contact Rob Peacock or Michael Nilsen, AFP Director of Public Affairs, at (800) 666-3863.
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) represents more than 26,000 members in 169 chapters throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico, working to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs. The Association fosters development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the fundraising profession. The Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation is proud to be a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
