The Capitol Theatre Presents Carlos Del Junco
The Capitol Theatre will be host an evening of music with Carlos Del Junco. Carlos plays a ten-hole diatonic harmonica, and has developed the unique ability to play chromatically by using recently developed "overblow" technique that he learned from a jazz virtuoso named Howard Levy. This approach to the diatonic harmonica is in many ways more expressive and communicative than the mechanized tone produced by the chromatic harmonica.
With the help of the late Bill Kinnear, Carlos Del Junco released his first CD, Blues on the independent label Big Reed Records in November of 1993. The rich collection of blues classics was a collaborative effort with Kinnear playing acoustic and dobro guitars and handling lead vocals. Five out of six reviewers in the Toronto Blues Society selected Blues for their top ten releases of 1993.
Carlos will be at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday November 25th, 2000 at 8:00 p.m. for one night only. Tickets are available for $21. Call the Capitol Theatre for more information at (905) 885-1071 or 1-800-434-5092.

Rebound Literacy Program
Program Summary
READbound is the only literacy service in Northumberland designed to provide 'at risk' children (5 -18 years of age) with improved skills in reading, writing, phonics, spelling, grammar, comprehension and math. The community has overwhelmingly responded to this new program; requesting assistance for children from all over the County, with new volunteers committing their time to the educational assistance of our young people.
Trained volunteer Tutors are matched with children on an individual basis, where they commit 2-5 hours per week in structural learning. Many tutors are assigned to an in-school placement, where the school identifies 'at risk' children with deficits in learning, and the families are offered a Tutor, who assists the child during resource or special education time. Tutors are also for educational support after school, evenings and weekends.
Many of us take for granted the ability to read fluently and we need to focus on the 'at risk' children who may not have "mainstream learning style", and who are struggling to cope in the traditional education system. Ability to perform directly affects self-esteem and willingness to learn new concepts, which significantly provides opportunities, in the future of that child! The keys to success are through education and positive mentoring!!!

The following is something to make us stop and think. Take this quiz:
Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
Easier?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
The Lesson?:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards.
They are the ones that care.

FOURINFO.COM
NOW ONLINE
The Northumberland portion of the fourinfo.com
database is now online. What exactly does this mean?
If you go to www.fourinfo.com, you will see a button that says: "Search the Online Database". If you click on this button, you have options to search the info NORTHUMBERLAND database by key words, by subject or by organization name. For example, if you were looking for information on info NORTHUMBERLAND and you had ticked by "full text", you would get any record that has info or Northumberland. If you were on organization name, you would only get "info NORTHUMBERLAND". If you had ticked off search by subject, you might want to search for "information". You would get a number of records in response to that search and info NORTHUMBERLAND would be one of them.
When there is more than one response to a search, the search results will be in alphabetical order and you will need to scroll down to find the one most appropriate to your search.
When
you click on the name of an organization, you are actually clicking on a link to
the record for that organization. When that file opens, you will see a number of
"fields" that have names such as Address, Eligibility, Description
etc. At the top of the record, there will be a link that says "Update
Information". If you click on that link, the fields will open up and you
will be able to enter updated information. Obviously, you should only do this,
if you are an approved spokesperson for your organization. When you submit this
information, you will get an e-mail telling you that it has been submitted to
us. We also get an e-mail which tells us that you have submitted suggestions for
updates to that record. Those updates will not be published online until our
staff have verified the information is valid. Then we will approve the updates
for online publishing and the public will be able to view the updated
information.
If your organization is not on our database and you feel it should be, you can call or e-mail our office and we will send you a questionnaire to get the required information.
You will also see another button on our homepage, which will allow you to search the "Volunteer Opportunities" database. It isn't very well populated yet, but there are a number of organizations searching for volunteers who have submitted their information. Please go in and have a look. If your organization would like to post volunteer opportunities, contact our office and we will send you a questionnaire for that database.
Any agency that posts volunteer opportunities will have a link in their information record that says "Volunteer Opportunities". If someone finds a volunteer opportunity that interests him/her, at the bottom of the volunteer record is a button that links to the information record in the information database.
We, at info NORTHUMBERLAND, have worked very hard to bring this exciting new service. We invite you to "play" in our database and strengthen your knowledge of the community. If you would like to, you can download the program below which will put an icon on your desktop to bring you right to our site. We think you will find it a very useful site to visit on a regular basis and are excited to be host to your quest for community information.

Coordinator
of info NORTHUMBERLAND Achieves Professional Recognition
- by Mark Vander Vennen,
Chair
Board of Directors, info NORTHUMBERLAND
The Board of Directors of info NORTHUMBERLAND is pleased to announce that its Coordinator, Lori Pearson, has become one of Canada's first "Certified Information and Referral Specialists" (CIRS). CIRS is a rigorous, state-of-the-art certification process developed in the United States by the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems (AIRS) and which is now recognized internationally. Certification has just been offered for the first time in Canada, and Pearson was a member of the initial group of 33 Canadians to participate in the process. She passed certification with a remarkable 92% mark.
Pearson's certification coincides with the launch of info NORTHUMBERLAND's online, searchable database of over 1400 community organizations serving Northumberland County. The community information database, which includes thorough service descriptions of all the organizations listed, is complemented by a second database outlining volunteer opportunities in Northumberland County. Not only can prospective volunteers apply to an organization online, but also a section of the database is devoted to helping high school students fulfill their new community volunteer requirement. Both databases can be found at www.fourinfo.com.
Development of the online databases has been funded by a consortium of partners, including the Northumberland United Way, the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, Human Resources and Development Canada (HRDC), the Ministry of Community and Social Services, and a wide range of Northumberland children and adult services. Pearson's talents have been recognized by several government ministries, which have asked info NORTHUMBERLAND to spearhead the development of these databases into the counties of Peterborough, Victoria, and Haliburton.
info NORTHUMBERLAND congratulates Lori Pearson on her outstanding certification achievement. Drop Lori a note of congratulations at northumberland@fourinfo.com. Better yet, drop in at the info NORTHUMBERLAND office, located next to the Chamber of Commerce in the Northumberland Mall, and do it in person.

BRIGHT
STARTS CHRISTMAS PARTY
Bright Starts is a program of Northumberland Child Development Centre
providing support to families in need during pregnancy and early parenting
(children 0-2 years of age). Christmas can be a difficult time for some of our
parents. They make sure their children receive gifts for Christmas but they
themselves receive very little, if anything.
Because of this, there will be a Bright Starts Christmas party held on Tuesday, December 19th, 2000 for all 133 participants of the weekly program. The parents and their children will come from all areas of the county and are looking forward to this party. They will have a turkey dinner, homemade entertainment of skits, spoofs, etc., and will generally, celebrate the holidays.
Bright Starts is hoping to provide each parent with a gift or gift bag of items. If you would like to assist us by donating gifts to be given to a young or single parent (we have some dads as well), here are some suggested items:
sweatshirts or sweaters, socks, gloves
personal care items (i.e. shampoo, hairbrush, hair clips, bath gel)
gift certificates for a hair cut or dinner out
other items (i.e. board games, candles, candy, specialty tea, tools)
Bright Starts gratefully appreciates any assistance in this enormous community project. For more information, or to have your donation picked up, please call Northumberland Child Development Centre at (905) 885-8137. Merry Christmas!
