Listening and Social/Emotional
Development
for Children from Birth to School Age.
A workshop designed for parents, early childhood educators, audiologists, teachers, caregivers, speech-language pathologist and physicians.
Featuring: Carolyn Edwards, Audiologist
Course Description:
With the introduction of infant hearing screenings across the
province, we have new opportunities to affect the development of listening
skills in young children. Implications of infant and preschool/school
hearing screening programs for parents and professionals will be
discussed. Management of children with subtle hearing loss, including
children with unilateral hearing loss, minimal or mild loss, and
fluctuating hearing loss due to middle ear infections, through preschool and
early school years, will be addressed. The impact of hearing and listening
skills on children's social emotional development is also substantial.
Ideas to promote healthy self worth in children with listening difficulties by
teachers, parents, families, clinicians and support personnel will be presented
through direct experience and examples.
Carolyn Edwards, M.CI.Sc., M.B.A. is a Director of Auditory Management Services, a private practice in educational audiology which provides consulting services to ten school boards in southwestern Ontario and consultation on request to boards across the province, and the hearing aid industry. She provides workshops and courses across Canada and the United States and has written numerous articles in educational audiology. 3. Positive Alternatives for
School Suspensions:
The PASS Program has been a great success, with children 5-16 years of age being
referred by their parents. Upon suspension from school, the school assigns
work that the student may bring to the PASS Program, to be completed with
supervised instruction. If your child is suspended from school -
just call to inquire about booking a seat for your child in this program.
4. Enrichment
Programs:
a) "HOOPS": During the last three months, Rebound has partnered with
Stan Muldoon and students from St. Mary's Secondary School in Cobourg, to offer
a drop-in basketball program to youth throughout the Cobourg area.
"Hoops" has allowed youth between the ages of 8-14 the opportunity to
learn and enjoy basketball, through conditioning exercises, while learning a
variety of new skills and playing games of basketball. With the
Sponsorship of The Baltimore-Cobourg Optimist Club, we were able to reward the
hard work and determination of the St. Mary's student Coaches and our
participants, taking 35 people to see the Toronto Raptors play ball at the Air
Canada Centre!
WE ARE CURRENTLY EVALUATING THE NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY AND WILL BE OFFERING
OTHER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS (in various Towns) IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
b) SUMMER PROGRAMS: Rebound Youth Services will once again be holding arts &
crafts and a Create-A-Book Camp in the summer - watch for more information to
follow.
NEW- "CAREER CAMPS" - Rebound is also partnering with the Community
Training and Development Centre to offer specially designed Career Camps, for
youth ages 12-15 years of age, with a strong emphasis on young girls.
These Camps will run throughout the summer months, with the intent of allowing
teens the opportunity to experience different careers such as:
EMERGENCY SERVICES - Police, Fire, Ambulance & Coast Guard
ARMED FORCES - Special two week camp with a Military "Green Star Award & Certificate" upon camp completion.
ENVIRONMENTAL - Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, exploring botany, ecotourism, hiking and survival.
NOTE:

partner in various crime prevention initiatives. It has been brought to
our attention by local Police Services that Cobourg has a problem with cocaine -
specifically Crack Cocaine. This committee has been devised with
representation from both School Boards. Police Services, the Health Unit
and Social Service Agencies to explore the needs of our communities in
Northumberland and come up with a proactive plan of action and education for all
drug related issues. Community awareness is an important facet in dealing
