Welcome to the first edition of fourinfo.com News and Views!

History is being made as we offer the first four county community newsletter.  Admittedly, this edition is not comprehensive.  We are relying on YOU, our readers, to contribute and utilize this terrific opportunity to share your agency events and/or information.  Thanks to those, who jumped on the bandwagon and submitted info for this, the premiere edition.  If you will note, our title is Fourinfo News and Views.  If there is a burning issue that you would like to inform our readers of, please don't hesitate to send us an editorial.  As long as your opinion represents the spirit of the newsletter (i.e. is not insulting, discriminatory etc.  we would be glad to print it.)  Our policy is to include editorials that reflect the human service community's commitment to the families we serve.  Don't be shy, let those creative juices flow!

211 Approved as the Number to Call for Community Information!

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has assigned access number 211 to a new, toll free service that will supply information and referrals about community, social, health and government services. The decision was announced on August 9, 2001.

The United Way of Canada and a number of other agencies brought the application for three-digit dialing access to the Commission last year. In its bid for the access number, the United Way group was supported by many parties, including municipalities, regional and provincial governments, community information centres, local distress centres, Kids Help Phone, volunteer centres and community medical services.

In North America, three-digit access numbers are reserved for specific services. Until now, in Canada, the only access numbers left were 211 and 311. 411 service is used for directory assistance. 511 has been held in reserve in Canada for access to Message Relay Service (MRS) by hearing persons to communicate with deaf persons, and 711 provides access to MRS by the deaf. 611 is used for telephone repair assistance, 811 is currently reserved for telecommunications service providers' business offices and 911 is used for emergency services.

The United Way group applied in June 2000 for the use of 211 to provide non-commercial, Canada-wide access to information and referrals.

In its application, the United Way group said organizations taking part in the information and referral services would have to meet standards developed by social service agencies.  info NORTHUMBERLAND's Coordinator, Lori Pearson, became one of Canada's first certified Information and Referral Specialists last November. Lori  is currently a member of a committee working to ensure that the certification process for Information and Referral Specialists, originally developed by the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems in the United States is revised to reflect Canadian content and the Canadian experience.

Residents of the four county area,  shouldn't expect to be able to access this service right away.   For this initiative to be implemented locally, it will need to be endorsed by local government.  In the CRTC application, it was expected that the services will be established nation-wide over the next ten years.

This service will be free to the public.

Connecting Non Profit organizations to the Internet

Non-profit or registered charitable organizations interested in accessing the Internet to increase efficiency and furthering their mandate, may qualify for assistance through Industry Canada’s VolNet Program. VolNet offers Internet connectivity, computer equipment, new information technologies, network support and skills development at a substantially reduced rate for qualifying organizations.

Voluntary sector organizations connected to the online community can use the Internet to provide their staff and volunteers with the latest information on fundraising, marketing and promotions, recruiting volunteers, and further their ability to share information with like minded groups from across the globe.

The Voluntary Sector Network Support Program (VolNet) is a federal government program administered by Industry Canada to improve the voluntary sector’s access to information technology and to the related skills and tools available to help it play a stronger role in Canadian society.  VolNet is a part of the government’s Connecting Canadians initiative to make Canada the most connected country in the world. To date, the United Way of Peterborough & District, which oversees the Peterborough VolNet Program, has helped connect over 70 community groups since January 2001 with only 25 spots remaining.

Minister Johns Announces Task Force- July 5, 2001

The Honorable Helen Johns, Associate Minister of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), formally announced the establishment of the Central East Mental Health Implementation Task Force (MHITF) at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre on July 5, 2001.  The Task Force is one of nine task forces established by the Minister in response to the advice of the Health Services Restructuring Commission.  Mental Health Implementation Task Forces will develop recommendations for provincial psychiatric hospital restructuring, community reinvestments and the implementation of mental health reform.  MHITFs are meant to be an interim structure, with the flexibility to evolve to address the implementation requirements of the areas that they serve.

While announced only recently, the Central East (Whitby) Task Force actually began work with an inaugural meeting on February 28, 2001 and has been moving forward quickly ever since.

Membership on the Task Force is broad and includes consumers, family members, service providers and other community representatives.  Covering York Region, Durham Region, the Counties of Victoria, Haliburton, Northumberland and Peterborough, and part of the former City of Scarborough, the area is large and complex.  It has a population of over two million residents and includes 35 community mental health programs, 8 general hospitals, and a large state-of-the-art tertiary care facility at Whitby Mental Health Centre.

The Task Force has made a commitment to communicate on a regular basis with the local stakeholders.  A quarterly newsletter will be produced and distributed and significant events will be communicated monthly through an electronic bulletin.  Anyone who would like to be included on the mailing list should contact nancy.kula@moh.gov.on.ca.

In addition to written communications, the Chair of the Task Force, Jean Achmatowicz-MacLeod, would welcome any opportunities to meet with interested stakeholders.  We also invite stakeholders to present at Task Force or subcommittee meetings on topics relevant to the work of the Task Force.  Please contact Nancy Kula for further information.

 What is Ontario’s Promise?

Ontario's Promise is a way to build a better future for all of our children.  It aims to bring businesses, non-profit agencies serving children, community leaders, parents and individuals together to make and keep five promises to the province's young people.

These five promises cover what experts agree children and youth need to become healthy, happy and responsible adults.

1.
A healthy start
2.      An adult who cares
3.
Safe places to learn and grow
4.      The tools to succeed
5.
A chance to make a difference

Ontario's promise seeks to build on the province's long tradition of philanthropy and community service by calling on the private sector to meaningfully increase the resources provided to agencies serving children and youth in three ways: financial contributions, in-kind resources and employee volunteer time.

Agencies are encouraged to work with Ontario's Promise partners and use these new resources to expand the programs they are already delivering, or start new "Projects of Promise".  Individuals are asked to make new volunteer commitments.  Many non-profit agencies, service clubs and industry associations are becoming partners in Ontario's Promise.

We would like to invite you to be part of Ontario’s Promise.

For information on how you can help make Northumberland County a better place to grow and learn, please attend the information session.

The CAP sites are sponsored by Industry Canada and coordinated by COIN, a local community economic development agency. Fairview will serve as a hub for the rural and urban area in the north part of Peterborough to Lakefield offering high speed internet access information to the farming community, businesses and residents.

Did you know...
Preventable injuries account for 40% of deaths of children aged one to four years. Some of these deaths and many other injuries are due to the use of unsafe children's products. As a caregiver, you know that good-quality, used children's products are in demand but did you know that it is illegal to advertise, sell or give away children's products that do not meet current standards? As well, the person who sells or gives away a product could be held responsible if a child is injured by the product. The Health Unit has a number of pamphlets to help parents and caregivers in choosing safe used children's products. Copies can be obtained from your local Health Unit.

THE FAMILY CAREGIVER NETWORK IS LOOKING FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

The Family Caregiver Network is a grass roots, self-help, support, education, and advocacy organization dedicated to improving the lives of the families and caregivers of people with a serious mental illness. It serves the counties of Haliburton, Peterborough, Victoria and Northumberland, and is managed by an Executive Board, consisting of volunteer family/caregivers from each of the four counties.

WE OFFER

SUPPORT GROUPS - The FCN will help facilitate the formation of a support group or provide direction to an existing group in your local area.

PUBLIC EDUCATION & ADVOCACY - The FCN strives to provide family & public education and promotion to help to demystify mental illness and dissolve the stigma attached to this illness. We support others involved in mental health promotion and we lobby for change in supports for family/caregivers.  All board members must be family and caregivers of someone with a serious mental illness.
