Celebrating Volunteer IT Excellence

To mark the International Year of Volunteers, the Information Technology Association of Canada for Ontario (ITAC Ontario), and the Government of Ontario's Ministry of Citizenship have partnered with Showcase Ontario to present the first Voluntary Sector IT Awards. The four winners represent outstanding voluntary sector organizations that have put information technology to the greater service of their communities.

The awards were presented during Showcase Ontario Awards Banquet (held September 12, 2001) by Mr. Frank Clegg, President & CEO of Microsoft Canada. "The winners of these awards represent a spirit that is fundamental to our industry," said Mr. Clegg. "Acknowledging the great contributions they've
made sends a strong message throughout the community."

The Diamond Award of Excellence was presented to the Community Information Online Consortium (CIOC), a province-wide collective of organizations serving local communities. reBOOT Canada, St. Christopher House's Bang the Drum project, and In Kind Canada all received Certificates of Merit.

The "fourinfo.com" is a member of the Community Information Online Consortium and info NORTHUMBERLAND Coordinator, Lori Pearson, was the secretary for the CIOC Board during its first year of existence.

Robert Horwood, President of ITAC Ontario, and one of the Showcase Ontario judges, said, "CIOC enables organizations to share a broad range of community information, and facilitate individual citizens to find volunteer opportunities that meet their needs and interests. CIOC represents a model example of IT's ability to foster and promote inter-organizational communication and cooperation, with the end result being improved access to community resources across the province."

reBOOT Canada was recognized for its program of refurbishing and distributing used computer hardware to community organizations, In Kind Canada for its cost-efficient and effective program of bringing in-kind donations to those who need them, and St. Christopher House for its grassroots Bang the
Drum initiative, which provides critical IT skills development training at no charge for people in their community.

"The Government of Ontario celebrates the achievements of all organizations that put their projects forward for the new Voluntary Sector IT Awards," said Cam Jackson, Minister of Citizenship. "We are proud to
recognize volunteer projects that use technology to enhance the effectiveness and impact of volunteerism in their communities. We are also pleased that the Diamond award winner CIOC and one of the certificate of
merit winners In Kind Canada, received funding through the Ministry of Citizenship's Volunteer@ction.online program."

The Voluntary Sector IT Awards represents the first major initiative of the newly formed Making IT Work for Volunteers program (www.volunteersonline.ca). This joint venture between ITAC Ontario and the Government of Ontario's Ministry of Citizenship is working with the private, public, and voluntary sectors to e-enable volunteer organizations throughout the province, and help bridge the digital divide.

Showcase Ontario's Awards of Excellence are part of an annual event that includes conferences, workshops, labs and one of the largest trade shows in Canada specifically designed to spotlight public and private information technology solutions for the public sector.

NEWS FROM NHCC

Twelve-Station Dialysis Unit Approved for New Hospital - A new, 12-station dialysis unit has been approved for the new hospital by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care. The dialysis unit in the new hospital will be a satellite to the regional program currently being run in Peterborough. Plans for the new dialysis unit have already been accounted for in the tender documents for construction of the new facility.

New Role Created for Patient Relations Co-ordinator - The new role of Patient Relations Co-ordinator at the NHCC will be filled by Communications Co-ordinator Kerry Ramsay. Her duties will include working with individual units/departments in the hospital to solicit and receive patient concerns and compliments, and co-ordinating management and resolution of patient concerns through collaboration with those who have an interest in the issue/concern. Ms. Ramsay will also help create a Patient's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities, in consultation with physicians, hospital staff and patients.

Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club to Host Bowl-a-thon - The Cobourg Lawn Bowling Club will host a 24-hour bowl-a-thon from September 28th to 29th, with all funds being donated to the new hospital. ‘STUDENTS SUPPORTING SENIORS”

Over the past couple years, students from high schools throughout Northumberland County have volunteered their time and energy for a FREE clean-up day each spring and fall to help seniors and handicapped persons.

Students are willing to tackle a wide variety of jobs for seniors - including yard work, cleaning or general household chores.  Students are not allowed, for safety reasons, to use chainsaws, axes or gas/electric clippers or weed-eaters.  Work involving ladders is also out - no second story or roof work please!

The help that the students provide can be a real benefit for seniors - helping older persons to continue enjoying living in their own homes.  The seniors who take part in the program are those who generally enjoy the company of younger people.

The next FREE Fall Clean Up will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2001.  Calls will be taken up to October 12, 2001.

For more information about “Students Supporting Seniors”, please contact your nearest participating Community Care office: Campbellford & District Community Care 653-1411; Hastings Community Care 696-3891; Cobourg District Community Care 372-7356;  and Port Hope & Hope Community Care 885-9860.
