Research into Practice" Learning Disabilities Conference
On November 1st and 2nd 2001, a conference will be held on learning disabilities for the first time in five years in Ontario. The conference will be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The conference features more than 60 outstanding Canadian speakers who share a passion for increasing our understanding of issues in the field of learning disabilities and for advocacy on behalf of individuals with learning disabilities. Registration prices include:

This conference is an opportunity for people in mental health and addiction fields to examine leading edge research, programs and services, and translating the latest breakthroughs and knowledge into improved services. Northumberland United Way Campaign Chairs are Announced for 2001
The Northumberland United Way is excited to announce that Rene and Laura Roberge are the co-chairs for the 2001 fall campaign. The annual showcase of delectables will kick-off the Northumberland campaign on Wednesday, September 12th, 2001. Call the Northumberland United Way office at 905-372-6955 for more information.
Herbal and Traditional Healing Workshops and Events in Port Hope
Claiming Yourself with Susan McDonald is a weekend of discovery with meditation, writing and connecting with yourself. Held on Saturday August 11th from 12:00 noon to dusk, and Sunday August 12 from 12:00 noon until dinner (which is a pot-luck). The fee is $50.00 plus food for the pot-luck.
Wild Food Dinner with Susan McDonald is a dinner using at least ten wild ingredients one of which you will be asked to bring. The dinner is being held from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on August 1st with a fee of $20.00. This dinner is limited to 20 people and participants may also bring wine if they so choose.

The Easter Seals Society Open Meeting

The District Coordinator of Southern Ontario invites anyone interested in the organization to an open meeting to be held on Wednesday July 18th at 7:00pm at the Columbus Community Centre, 232 Spencer Street (at Darcy Blvd) Cobourg. Showcase
of Sound: Music in the Square
Come and enjoy local performers as they showcase their talent in Cobourg. Concerts will be held Thursday nights at 7:00pm until August 30th, at the Victoria Square behind the old Firehall Theatre. Admission is free! People are asked to bring their own lawn chair.

The 10th Annual AIDS Walk is being held on Sunday September 23rd, 2001. The start location is Mark Street United Church, 90 Hunter Street East, Peterborough. Registrations begin at 1:00pm followed with a warm up at 1:45pm led by Peter Adams MP and the walk begins at 2:00pm.
There are three easy steps to participate:
1. Gather pledges
2. Bring your form and money to the start location
3. Walk, run, skip or roller blade through Peterborough.
On
the day of the walk you get
AIDS Walk t-shirt with $50.00 or more pledges collected
Submit $300.00 and receive a AIDS Walk backpack
Refreshments courtesy of Subway Sandwiches and Deli, along with granola bars and juice
Each walker gets tulip bulbs
Satisfaction of raising money to provide HIV/AIDS services in Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, and Haliburton counties.

History Weekend at Presqu'ile
The History Weekend celebration takes place between August 3rd and August 6th 2001 throughout the
Presqu'ile Provincial Park. Your family can relive the parks storied past by stepping into the
time of flappers, box lunch picnics, sailing regattas and of course the sinking
of the fabled schooner "Speedy".
Beginning on Friday August 3rd, travel back in time on your bike and participate in the grande opening of the Lighthouse Interpretive Centre. You can also take a deer walk, enjoy silent movies, golf, participate in a real box lunch auction and social, enjoy authentic old fashioned fun and games, meet rumrunners, pirates and squatters, attend an old fashioned fashion show, participate in a boat building bee, a Calthumpian Parade and much more!
On Sunday night you can also see a new play that incorporates the "Speedy" as well Harry Kotter will be visiting.

resignation of the Chief Executive Officer, Wendy Brown effective September 30,
2001.
Mrs.
Brown has accepted the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Oshawa Public
Library and will be joining that system effective October 1, 2001.

transportation for older and disabled adults to medical appointments and
procedures, both local and out of town. Drivers are reimbursed for their
out of pocket expenses. Volunteers are especially needed for dialyses
appointments in Whitby on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from approximately

NORTHUMBERLAND is now located beside "Save-a-Centre". Our phone and fax

to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Health Care Receives Donations
Several organizations have recently made generous contributions to the
hospital's "Caring for Generations" campaign, which will help fund the
construction of the new hospital in Cobourg. Among the givers were: Citizens
Coalition for Economic Action, Northumberland Lakeshore Hospice, Andersen
Dynamics Limited, and Bailey, McNichol Wilson & Associates. Along with other
donations, the Rotary Club recently made a donation that will be used to
purchase equipment to create photo ID cards for hospital staff and volunteers.
The hospital also has many upcoming fundraising events which are:
The Country Pumpkin, located at 41 King Street West in Cobourg, will be holding a BBQ fundraiser for the new hospital on Friday, August 17th from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
During the annual King Street Sidewalk Sale, The Country Pumpkin will be holding a "Dunktank for Dollars," so stop by and take part in the fun!
Another downtown store, Uniquely Yours on King Street, is holding a raffle for a gift basket worth $300 filled with handcrafted items. Tickets will be on sale from now until August 31st, and cost $2 each or 3 for $5.
On August 4th, Judy's Tea House on Division Street beside the Public Utilities of Cobourg building will be holding a BBQ fundraiser for the new hospital, starting at 11 a.m. All proceeds will be donated to the "Caring for Generations" campaign.
Thomas Pontiac Buick "Test Drive for Your New Hospital". If you've been thinking about test driving a new or used vehicle this summer, here's your chance to do so, and benefit the new hospital. For every new or used vehicle test driven on Tuesday, August 7th, between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thomas Pontiac Buick GMC in Cobourg will make a donation of $10 to the "Caring for Generations" campaign in support of the new hospital.
