Tips for Protecting your computer

  1. Ensure that you have the most RECENT version of your anti-virus software installed on your computer (Most anti-virus software allows for free software updates).
  2. Ensure that you have the most RECENT anti-virus definitions installed on your computer. Most anti-virus software companies are continually researching new viruses that appear everyday, and are then making fixes available. (i.e. McAfee uses something called .DAT files). If you have viral definition files from a year ago, your software will most likely not be able to recognize or fix a virus that was created last month.
  3. Do not open unknown email attachments. Also ensure that your anti-virus software has email scanning enabled.
  4. Another way to reduce the threat of viruses entering through your email, is to try out different email software. An example is Pegasus Mail, which can stop suspicious email attachments before they have a chance to propagate. Pegasus Mail can be downloaded for free here:
    www.pmail.com
  5. If you are using a stand-alone computer, you may want to consider installing “firewall” software. This adds an extra layer of protection from the possible threat of individuals causing harm through open “ports” on your computer. A great free program for this is called Zone Alarm. It can be downloaded for free at:
    www.zonealarm.com
If you do not have a firewall installed, a very informative site for possible security breaches, is:
https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Click on “Test my Shields!”. This site can give you a complete security analysis of your computer. If this site can retrieve information about your computer, then you should install a firewall.
  6. Remove “Windows Scripting Host” from the Windows Setup. Chances are you are not using this component, and removing it can reduce the chance of viruses using it against you. You can remove it by following these steps:
    A. Open Control Panel
    B. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
    C. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
    D. Double-click on the Accessories section.
    E. Un-check “Windows Scripting Host
    F. Click “Ok” to exit the setup program
If you do not have anti-virus software setup on your computer, you can purchase, or test drive one at any of the links below.
